The fed cattle market sold on a mixed demand. The number of live finished steers and heifers sold through auction markets was 1,890 up 697 from last week. The average fed steer price was $91.05 down $1.12 and the average heifer price was $91.64 up $1.73 from last week.   Auction markets reported fed cattle sold actively with prices steady to strong early in the week to $2.00-$3.00 lower as the week progressed.

 

Slaughter cows sold a little stronger this week. There were 1,762 head of slaughter cows sold through auction markets which is 77 lower than last week. The average price was $34.57 up $1.02 from last week and $5.26 higher than a year ago. Auction markets reported that slaughter cows sold on a strong active trade with prices fully steady to $1.00 higher.

 

Replacement cattle sold on a softer market this week. The total number of stockers sold was 10,185 down 5.8% from last week and 3% more than last year at this time.  Auction markets reported that calves traded barely steady to under pressure with yearlings selling steady to slightly higher.  Steers 900 + averaged $112.21 up $2.26 and heifers 800+ averaged $104.93 up $1.29 from last weeks prices.  Steers 400-500 lbs averaged $135.88 down $5.88 while heifers 400-500 lbs averaged $123.80 down $4.55 from last week.

 

Ontario railgrade prices reported this week for steers were $155.00-$157.00 and $154.00-$156.00  for heifers with prices $2.00 higher on average than last week.  Prices were reported in the higher range early in the week and lower as the week went on.

 

In Alberta, cattle trade was light to moderate with prices $0.50-$1.50 lower. Steers sold $82.00-$85.50 live and $138.00-$141.50 dressed.  Heifers traded $82.25-$85.55 live and $136.80-$141.50 dressed.

 

U.S. cash cattle trade was active by Wednesday and finished by Thursday this week with sales $1.00-$2.00 lower.  Steers and heifers sold $85.00-$88.50 live and $135.00-139.00 dressed.
